9.5/10

RT SYNOPSIS: After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. When he finds himself training a detachment of Top Gun graduates for a specialized mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen, Maverick encounters Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), call sign: “Rooster,” the son of Maverick’s late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick Bradshaw, aka “Goose”. Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it.

DAVID’S REVIEW: A fun, joyous, intense and overall amazing film, Top Gun: Maverick earned not only my highest rated movie of the year, but of all time. Fans of the original Top Gun (1986) will feel plenty of satisfying nostalgia. Unlike most sequels, the nostalgia and homage to the original film didn’t feel forced or cheap. It felt familiar and fresh at the same time. The only problem I had was the pace of the film which slowed way down at times and was clunky towards the end. Still, this barely put a dent in everything great about the movie.

Top Gun: Maverick’s strengths were its acting (Cruise was great as always), writing, cinematography and sound. The soundtrack was perfect too. The decision by Cruise and Bruckheimer to use real planes and sets paid off bigtime. It wasn’t just a movie, it was an experience. It felt as if I was in the cockpit with the pilots. Truly amazing.

Top Gun: Maverick checks off all the boxes of everything fans love in a movie. You’ll laugh, cry and cheer. It’s a good ol’ American movie without any unnecessary propaganda or sexual content. Don’t wait to see this one at home. The theater, preferably IMAX, is where this film rightfully deserves to be watched to feel its greatness.
