David’s FULL REVIEW
5.5/10
RT SYNOPSIS: Legendary space ranger Buzz Lightyear embarks on an intergalactic adventure alongside ambitious recruits Izzy, Mo, Darby, and his robot companion, Sox. As this motley crew tackles their toughest mission yet, they must learn to work together as a team to escape the evil Zurg and his dutiful robot army that are never far behind.
RATED: PG | Action, Peril
AGENDAS/PROPAGANDA: Same-sex affection in multiple scenes and same-sex kiss occurs between two female characters. Typical new age Disney movie where some men were weak and clumsy while some of the female characters were strong and smart. AI named IVAN has a female voice.
NUDITY/SEXUAL CONTENT: None.
DAVID’S REVIEW: Agendas aside, Lightyear was boring. The plot was borrowed from other movies, such as Interstellar, and the movie became more and more uninteresting as it progressed. The movie had no connection to Toy Story. It’s as if Pixar had a crappy space movie and decided to dress it up with Buzz Lightyear’s fictional world from TS just to increase ticket sales. Character development was a huge problem and the supporting characters had no depth. Sox the robot cat was surprisingly funny.
My biggest issue with Lightyear was Buzz and his voice actor Chris Evans (Captain America). If you’re going to replace an iconic character voice in Tim Allen, the movie better be out of this world and/or the new voice actor must crush it and create his own identity within the Buzz character. Unfortunately, Evan’s version of Buzz was below average and dull. This was a bad move by Pixar. The movie would have been slightly better with the return of Allen’s voice.
I’d save your theater money on this one. Lightyear was a big missed opportunity. There are two post credit scenes.
