DAVID’S REVIEW: John Wick: Chapter 4 received the highest Rotten Tomato score than any of its three predecessors (95% Critic | 96% Audience). Many are proclaiming JW4 as the best John Wick film to date.
I disagree.
Although John Wick 4 was entertaining and offered some of the most unique/pure awesome action sequences (probably the best out of any of the movies so far), this was all JW4 had to offer. The franchise forgot its heart. I didn’t feel emotionally connected to anything that was going on, which was what made the previous John Wick films so great - deep emotional connection to John and the supporting cast.
With the first three JW films, not only were we treated to some of the best action scenes and choreography in cinema history, each film are paired with a deep, emotional plot.
Not so much in JW4.
The stakes were high and the payoffs were satisfying in the first three John Wick films. In JW4, director David Sandberg drowned out the weak plot with more action. A lot more. Some of the action scenes went on for so long, I felt hypnotized/numb.
You’ll ooh and aww, but you’ll most likely feel empty once the credits roll. Like there was something missing. When JW4 was over, I said to myself “I mean that was cool, but so what? What now?”
I gave John Wick 4 an 7/10. Be sure to stay after for one post-credit scene.
