DAVID’S REVIEW: There was so much to love about The Super Mario Bros. Movie, especially if your childhood involved video games. The 80s and 90s kids will notice most, if not all, of the Easter eggs throughout - and there were many! The movie’s nostalgia, animation and humor were its greatest strengths. It was Illumination’s most beautifully animated film to date.
CONS: The SMB’s plot was weak, thin, and the movie felt rushed. This is what held the SMB from scoring higher. It could have been so much better with a more carefully constructed screenplay and script. Again, everything felt rushed.
However, the SMB’s strengths far outweighed its weaknesses. It was a fun, joy-filled time at the theater. Illumination and Nintendo left no box unchecked when it came to including Easter eggs and iconic video game characters that we’ve all grown to love. The voice acting was on point. I had no issue with Mario (Chris Pratt), Bowser (Jack Black) or Luigi (Charlie Day).
Take the kids and enjoy the 92 minute, agenda-free ride!
