5.5/10

RT SYNOPSIS: The world's favorite blue hedgehog is back for a next-level adventure in SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2. After settling in Green Hills, Sonic is eager to prove he has what it takes to be a true hero. His test comes when Dr. Robotnik returns, this time with a new partner, Knuckles, in search for an emerald that has the power to destroy civilizations. Sonic teams up with his own sidekick, Tails, and together they embark on a globe-trotting journey to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands.

RATED: PG | Rude Humor, Mild Language, Action, Some Violence

AGENDAS: Frequent alcohol consumption. References to genitalia that adults and teens will catch, but younger children might not. Multiple fake uses of profanity that could be harmful to children (example: “Piece of shitake mushrooms”). One of the male characters (Dr. Robotnik’s assistant) had a strong, seemingly romantic like infatuation with another male character (Dr. Robotnik - played by Jim Carrey).

NUDITY/SEXUAL CONTENT: None.

DAVID’S REVIEW: Being a huge fan of the franchise, since playing the Sonic video game on my Sega Genesis in the 90s, I really wanted to like Sonic 2. However, I found myself not being able to wait until the movie was over.

After the first Sonic movie pleasantly surprised average movie goers, and Sega fanboys, Sonic 2 doubled down on its predecessor’s formula with even more over-the-top attempts at humor and “epic” scenes. Unfortunately, it was too much. The slapstick humor (writing) was so forced, that virtually none of the packed theater (including myself) often laughed. Scenes that were supposed to be funny were cringe and fell flat. You might even find yourself getting annoyed at times.

I get what the writers were trying to do, but you don’t have to treat the audience like we’re all 2nd graders. And that’s just who this movie was made for - 7 year old boys. The forced humor was so distracting, the plot was an afterthought. Sonic 2 drowned itself in its own foolery. The best thing about this movie was its final act, which Sonic/Sega fans will appreciate.

Sonic 2 was beautiful to the eyes, but painful to the ears. Wait for Redbox on this one. (Be sure to read agendas)

*There is one post-credit scene that will excite Sonic/Sega fans the most!
