RT SYNOPSIS: Nicolas Cage stars as... Nick Cage in the action-comedy The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. Creatively unfulfilled and facing financial ruin, the fictionalized version of Cage must accept a $1 million offer to attend the birthday of a dangerous superfan (Pedro Pascal). Things take a wildly unexpected turn when Cage is recruited by a CIA operative (Tiffany Haddish) and forced to live up to his own legend, channeling his most iconic and beloved on-screen characters in order to save himself and his loved ones. With a career built for this very moment, the seminal award-winning actor must take on the role of a lifetime: Nick Cage.
RATED: R | Violence, Drug Use, Some Sexual References, Language Throughout
AGENDAS: 9-10 uses of religious profanity throughout the movie (“Jesus” “Jesus Christ”)
NUDITY/SEXUAL CONTENT: No nudity. A brief sexual reference about oral sex and intercourse with married characters.
DAVID’S REVIEW: The word that best describes this film…brilliant. With a movie industry, where originality has become scarce, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent was refreshing with Nicolas Cage playing a fictional version of himself. Although the movie isn’t based on a true story, you get to know the real Nick Cage as he battles his internal demons and mental struggles with life as a Hollywood actor. This was the movie’s strength.
UWMT was hilarious. The humor was not forced and came naturally. One of the best aspects of the film was Pedro Pascal who played Javi Gutierrez - a Nick Cage fanboy, Cartel member who was obsessed with Cage and the life of acting. Surprisingly, both Cage and Pascal’s chemistry worked extremely well.
The plot development and execution was on point for three-fourth’s of the way through the movie. This is the only reason why I didn’t score it higher. After the climax, the payoff didn’t feel as grand as the setup especially after the cheap plot twist, however I still felt satisfied leaving the theater. Welcome back, Nicolas Cage! Not that you ever left ;)
