David’s FULL REVIEW

7/10

RT SYNOPSIS: Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, "Avatar: The Way of Water" begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.

RATED: PG-13 | Partial Nudity, Intense Action, Sequences of Strong Violence, Some Strong Language

AGENDAS/PROPAGANDA: Frequent minor cursing. One “Jesus” line. Like the first movie, the story could mirror colonists vs. indigenous injustice, but the movie didn’t make it obvious.

NUDITY/SEXUAL CONTENT: Just blue naked people, but nothing too graphic.

DAVID’S REVIEW: Unlike many in the conservative community, I really enjoyed the first Avatar movie and gave it a ✅9/10. Unfortunately, Avatar: The Way of Water fell short. Let’s first go over what the movie got right.

PROS: Okay, the visuals in The Way of Water were just as, if not more, incredible than Avatar 1. I recommend seeing the movie in 3D if you can afford the $6,000 ticket. The movie’s soundtrack was solid. Director James Cameron introduces us to some new characters who were just interesting enough for me to care about and they fit well in the Avatar world. The plot and storyline were thin, but carefully crafted in order to set the stage for future Avatar films, which is exciting. The Avatar universe is worth expanding despite this movie’s major flaws.

CONS: The visuals and action sequences saved this movie from getting an OFA❌. First of all, The Way of Water DID NOT need to be 3 hours long. Some of the scenes were unnecessarily prolonged while others were cut too short. The movie was so messy and clunky, I didn’t have time to process what was going on. Even when I did process what was going on, I didn’t really care too much. The plot was thin. Mix a thin plot with bad character development and a messy and unorganized flow and you get boredom. And that’s how I felt many times during The Way of Water - bored. The visuals would bring me back; they were that good.

Another issue I had with TWOW was its lack of character building and development. The main characters I fell in love with from Avatar 1, Jake Sully (reprised by Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (reprised by Zoe Saldana), were almost non-existent. Especially Neytiri. I didn’t learn anything new about either character and that is a big problem. Sequels are supposed to build on already established, likeable characters. TWOW wasn’t one of those sequels. This movie was all brass and barely any brains when it came to character arc and development.

We waited 13 years and this was the best you could do, James Cameron & Disney?! What a disappointment. ✅7/10
