DAVID’S REVIEW: Oh the potential. I had high hopes for the darker, more cooler version of Santa Clause, but Violent Night turned out to be a dud. Just too many missed opportunities. The writing was below average and the casting was terrible, which led to poor acting. Santa Clause (played by David Harbour) might as well have been a mall cop. In fact, the movie would’ve worked better if he was one. Where was the magic?! Throughout the movie, I’d keep forgetting Harbour was really THEE Santa Clause. Again, so many missed opportunities.
Where the movie fell short, it tried to compensate with insane, over-the-top action and gore…lots of gore. Don’t take grandma or the kids to this. Overall, Violent Night was an underwhelming disappointment and I couldn’t wait for the movie to be over. This should have, and could have, been so much better. It’s a tragedy when an original idea goes to waste.
